Following Jeremy Lin's injury in November 2017, the basketball star is currently undergoing rehabilitation for his knee. Because of this, Brooklyn Nets recently filed for a disabled player exception.

According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, the NBA has granted a $6 million disabled player exception to the Brooklyn Nets. Because of losing Lin from a season-ending injury, the team has been badly depleted and they needed this grant.

To recall, Lin acquired a ruptured patella tendon in his right knee during the opener season in Nets' home against Indiana Pacers. While going for the basket, Lin crashed down on the floor. He stayed on the floor for some time because of the immense pain he felt. Knowing that he was badly hurt, Lin said, "I'm done" before crying. Due to the injury, Lin only played 36 games with an average of 14.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game.

According to the New York Post, the exception can be used until March 10 or the Nets can use it on Feb. 8 for the trading deadline. In order to use the exception, there are some restrictions that Nets need to follow.

The team needs to have an open roster spot. Since they do not have it now, they can create one and use the exception to sign, trade, or put a waiver claim on a player. It is not allowed to split the exception into multiple players. Also, it cannot be used to pay a portion of a player's contract or package it with another exception.

A player who is acquired through the exception will be a pending free agent with an expiring contract. The chosen player should also sign a one-year deal. With that, it is possible that the Nets will get into a trade to have a three-team deal. This way, they will be taking on someone else's expiring contract so they can land a draft pick.
