The Jodi Arias trial will resume Tuesday after the defense team asked for a mistrial on Monday.

Arias is expeted to take the stand today to address the jury. But analysts are not sure what to expect from Arias .

Monday was a dramatic day in court as Arias' attorneys announced that they would not be calling a single witness to plea for her life in the penalty phase of her trial. It had been widely expected that at least Arias' mother would be called to ask for compassion and sympathy on her daughter. Others who were expected to take the stand were a childhood friend of Arias', as well a former boyfriend. However, the news means that only Arias will be taking the stand on Tuesday.

It has been reported that one of the witnesses backed out at the last minute, and that sparked the defense team to submit a motion to the judge for a mistrial in the penalty phase.

The defense team said that Patricia Womack, a childhood friend of Arias, decided she would not testify after receiving death threats. They claimed that their witness had been intimidated and threatened and believed that it was a good cause for a mistrial to be ruled.

Defense attorney Kirk Nurmi told Judge Sherry Stephens: "This is constitutionally unacceptable."

Previously in the case Dr. Richard Samuels, a psychologist who testified that Arias suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, also claimed that he had received numerous death threats, and as a result he was no longer answering his cell phone.

Yet another witness for Arias, Alyce LaViolette, a domestic violence expert who testified that Arias was abused, also has reported that she had received threats.

Nurmi pushed those points and also complained about prosecutor Juan Martinez, whom he claimed had intimidated defense witnesses throughout the trial: "This cannot be a modern-day version of stoning or witch trials. When you have a prosecutor that this court allows to personally attack witnesses and counsel, it breeds this sort of environment where intimidating can take place. And this has been happening throughout trial."

However, the judge dismissed the application for a mistrial, meaning Arias will take to the stand today.
