John Mark McMillan: The Medicine

Could this be the surprise Christian album of the year? Well John Mark McMillan is no stranger to Christian music. ‘How He Loves’, made known by the renditions of David Crowder Band and Jesus Culture was in fact penned by this talented songsmith and has been doing the rounds at events this year was.

It’s become something of a favourite in recent years but it’s a new addition to his latest release, The Medicine. That’s because this album actually first came out in 2008 and has just been re-released by Integrity with the addition of How He Loves and three other tracks that weren’t on the original release.

‘How He Loves’ was written after the death of his best friend and all the emotions and pain he felt. It’s a powerful and uplifting song despite the tragic inspiration, proving McMillan to be something of a master when it comes to balancing soulfulness with a light touch.

His beautiful melodies and haunting riffs lead the listener easily to a place of worship that’s so warm and personal you feel like you could be in the room with him but it’s his deep storytelling voice that gives the songs a powerful kick.

There’s something about Southern Gospel that speaks to the heart but the modern arrangements and live studio feel mean this album should still have plenty of appeal even to those not usually interested in the genre.

This album is definitely one to take your time with, soak in and just enjoy. The tracks are a few years old but this re-release still feels like a breath of fresh air for the Christian music industry. More of this please!
