Jordan Clarkson news: Committed to play for Gilas Pilipinas
Jordan Clarkson is an authentic Filipino-American and can thus play for the Philippine national team better known as Gilas Pilipinas.
Clarkson, who is born to a Filipina mother, will have to satisfy certain International Basketball Federation (FIBA) requirements first in able to do so. He has so far fulfilled one requirement, which is to show proof that he is a Philippine passport carrier prior to turning 16. This is a requirement needed for FIBA to allow any local player to represent his country.
But seeing that Clarkson drew prominence after hitting it big with the Los Angeles Lakers, there are further documents and requirements that need to be submitted. According to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), such is underway.
It wasn't too long ago when such became a stumbling block for Clarkson. He could play for the Philippines as a naturalized player but the Philippines preferred to use that privilege for taller players considering the handicap the country has in size.
But a recent development that proves Clarkson indeed has a passport has come up; this means that if the pieces fall into place, Clarkson could play as a local player.
Before that happens, Gilas Pilipinas officials would need to seek clearance for Clarkson's services. That includes sitting down with the Lakers considering the sophomore guard is now a vital cog in the Lakers' rotation.
Then there is Jordan's father who, just last week, made it known that his son is unlikely to play for Gilas this year due to his commitment to the Lakers.
"My father Mike, has always looked out for my welfare and is only genuinely concerned for my career, my future and my wellbeing. His thoughts are that of a very loving dad," Clarkson said in a statement released by the SBP.
Jordan vowed to straighten things out with his dad when he gets home and says he is serious about playing for the Philippine team. If all goes well, his inclusion could be a big boost since he will be joining hands with Andray Blatche as well as the top basketball stars in the Philippines.
