Director Collin Trevorrow won't be coming back to helm "Jurassic World 2," but he is working on the script, and he will be collaborating with the sequel's director, J.A. Bayona. While the film is still over a year away from its premiere, Trevorrow recently shared some details regarding the sequel's plot and general themes.

Speaking to Time, Trevorrow stated that "Jurassic World 2" would be dealing with the issues of animal abuse. He stated that the dinosaurs would be used in the story as a parallel to the kind of abuse real animals get in the world today. He explained that the film would focus on how the dinosaurs are wrongfully treated in the likes of a prison, in the military, and in medical experiments, among others

This would harken back to a plot detail teased in the first "Jurassic World" movie, where the velociraptors were being trained so that they can be used by the military. It is possible that Trevorrow is hinting that this plotline will indeed make its way into the sequel and that viewers will see dinosaurs being used as disposable soldiers.

Director Bayona also confirmed in an interview with the spanish publication, Noticiasrcn, as translated by Scified, that the movie would be significantly darker than the first in terms of tone and scope.

"It will be darker and scarier than the previous film," Bayona stated. "The film takes the story where it has never been before. To me it surprised me. We are going to places where the saga has never been before, and at the same time we are paying tribute to the franchise. We will take it a step further. There are things that will happen that people are not expecting and they really are shocking," the director went on to say.

He did explain that there would still be light-hearted moments, particularly since actor Chris Pratt is reprising his role, and Pratt is known for his sense of humor. He also compared the movie to the likes of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" and "The Empire Strikes Back," both of which are darker films compared to their predecessors.

"Jurassic World 2" is scheduled to premiere on June 22, 2018.
