'Justice League' reviews: Superheroes have good chemistry; special effects are mediocre
The reviews are in for the new movie "Justice League" which received a mixed bag from critics who generally praised the superhero characters' chemistry but abhorred the weak story and poor computer-generated (CG) effects.
The movie directed by Zack Snyder received a mediocre 49 percent rating on Metacritic, which is a site that aggregates review scores from various entertainment outlets. Here are what some of the reviewers had to say.
Brian Roan from The Film Stage wrote, "In between battles the banter is light enough and the actors charming enough to make even the most leaden dialogue bounce a little." The superheroes Superman (Henry Cavill), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Batman (Ben Affleck), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Flash (Ezra Miller) appear to form a good chemistry together and have some convincing character moments throughout the film. The "Aquaman" movie is slated to arrive later the following year with Momoa in the lead.
Chris Nashawaty from Entertainment Weekly stated, "First, the good news. Justice League is better than its joylessly somber dress rehearsal, 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.' Now the 'but'...you knew there was a 'but' coming, right? But it also marks a pretty steep comedown from the giddy highs of Wonder Woman."
It seems that reviewers prefer "Justice League" over the darker "Batman v Superman" which did not do well critically. However, the new movie is outclassed by the highly successful "Wonder Woman" which did well at the box-office and received rave reviews. Apparently, superhero films with a lighter tone fare better with critics.
Kimberly Jones from the Austin Chronicle expressed, "Busy and boring and oppressively computer generated, 'Justice League' screams we're back to business as usual." The special effects left much to be desired as most critics noticed the unrealistic images that appeared to be rushed in production.
"Justice League" will premiere in theaters on Friday, Nov. 17.
