After a string of run-ins with the law and reports of bad behavior, Bieber has made a successful comeback with the release of his single, "What Do You Mean," which made it to the top of the Billboard charts. He is also set to release a yet-to-be-named album in November.

Earlier this year, Bieber said that most of the songs on his album were inspired by his relationship with Selena Gomez. The pair famously dated on and off for four years before calling it quits in December 2014, and while the two are still good friends with each other, they both decided to move on as they focus on their respective careers. In an interview with Complex magazine, the "Baby" singer talked about his relationship with the "Good For You" hitmaker, saying that he "learned a lot" from their time together.

"I learned a lot. I moved in with my girlfriend when I was 18. I started my life with her. It was a marriage kind of thing. Living with a girl, it was just too much at that time. But we were so in love. Nothing else mattered," Bieber said.

But the singer said that when two people get too wrapped up in each other, they would find their value in the other person, and doing so often leads to disappointment.

"Your girl or your dude, they're always going to disappoint you," he said. "Your full identity can't be in that person. My identity was in her. Her identity was in me."

The singer revealed that they would often fight "so hard" because they were so invested in each other.

Bieber went on to say that love is a choice—not a feeling.

"You're not gonna want to love your girl sometimes but you're gonna choose to love her," he said to the magazine.

Bieber said that he learned not to lean on people but to trust in God to get him through all his situations, and that hopefully his other relationships will grow as well.
