It's been two years since "Kingdom Hearts 3" was initially unveiled, during E3 2013, but no official release date has been set. The game has undergone an entire change of physics engine, and Tetsuya Nomura has been added to the game's staff. Now, an alleged email direct from Amazon hints that a release date may be announced down the line.

According to a report from Nerdopotamus, Amazon sent an email indicating that Square-Enix had changed the release date for the game and that it is now listed to release on Jan. 2, 2017. This was a response to a pre-order inquiry made by a representative by Nerdopotamus.

However, the report also points out that retailers have been known to give out incorrect information before, and for the most part, they are not to blame as publishers and game developers might delay their game's release at a moment's whim without notice or warning.

Given how long it has taken Square-Enix to develop their flagship titles such as "Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness," it is no surprise that "Kingdom Hearts 3" would release 4 years after its official unveiling.

At this point, Square-Enix has not announced an official release window, although many speculate this will change by E3 2016.

The report does cite that "Kingdom Hearts 2.8" will release in 2016, alongside the long-gestating "Final Fantasy XV," although neither has a definitive release date at this point. The former will play as a prologue to the main series and is paired with "Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage."

"Kingdom Hearts 3" will see the return of Sora, Donald Duck, Goofy, Mickey Mouse and Riku as they attempt to stop the evil Xehanort from starting a second "Keyblade War" to balance out the world of light and darkness. The game will introduce new worlds such as those inspired by "Tangled" and "Big Hero 6."
