'Kingdom Hearts 3' release date: Game to be presented at E3 2015?

Sora in Kingdom Hearts 3 Square-Enix

It has been a long time since there have been any solid news about "Kingdom Hearts 3." The last update directly related to the game was when it was announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo back in 2013. Indirectly, the game was reported to have suffered setbacks due to, among other things, the game's voice actors Leonard Nimoy and Chikao Otsuka passing away.

But if rumors are spot-on, fans of the series in the U.S. might get some details about the upcoming game at this year's E3 conference. The event, scheduled in June, is a showcase of all giants in the electronic entertainment industry, particularly the gaming one. This annual event was where big name publisher Square Enix publicized the title two years ago, and perhaps at this year's expo, the company will finally provide a few details about "Kingdom Hearts 3."

Square Enix will also participate in the D23 Expo in Japan, slated for Nov. 6 to 8, where news about the game is expected to be disclosed.

Speaking about the event, director Tetsuya Nomura told Famitsu (and translated by Gematsu), "We have some interesting things planned. There will be Kingdom Hearts 3 news, and various things, I think. Development on Kingdom Hearts 3 is going smoothly, but there will also be new announcements connected to it."

It also seems that aside from the third instalment of "Kingdom Hearts," Square Enix is also developing a mobile game based on the series.

Alluding to a possible mobile game for the "Kingdom Hearts" franchise, Nomura added, "As one of those new announcements, I think we should be able to announce a smartphone-specific development for the series in short order."

Square Enix hasn't officially declared whether or not any "Kingdom Hearts 3" unveiling would happen at this year's E3, but considering the rumored 2016 release date, the conference could be one of the major events that the company can use to promote the game.
