'Kingdom Hearts 3' release date in 2017?

While fans might be expecting that the next installment in the "Kingdom Hearts" story is released this year, the developer seems to be adjusting the release of "Kingdom Hearts III" for next year. Meanwhile, there is reportedly another "Kingdom Hearts" release set for a 2016 release.

According to KH13, the recent edition of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu Weekly featured the "Kingdom Hearts" series. The magazine had an interview with Tetsuya Nomura, director of the "Kingdom Hearts" series, as well as Shinji Hashimoto, the executive producer of the franchise.

Although the two did not directly say it, it seems that "Kingdom Hearts III" will release after 2016. The magazine quoted Nomura as saying, "We are moving into an important period for 'Kingdom Hearts III' and 'Final Fantasy VII Remake' development. As in previous years, this year will be one dedicated to development, but I think we'll be able to share some news and do some PR."

In addition, the director mentioned that the development team's focus is currently on another "Kingdom Hearts" title. Nomura said the company is highlighting "World of Final Fantasy" and "Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue" as launch titles and, while not directly stating it, the two games seem to be the priorities in the pipeline.

If "Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8" is set to release for 2016, a release date for "Kingdom Hearts III" for this year seems to be unlikely. Fans might instead be looking at 2017 and beyond for the third installment in the main story of "Kingdom Hearts."

However, developer Square Enix is open to a possibility of releasing "Kingdom Hearts III" as early as possible and might even surprise fans with a late 2016 or early 2017 release date.

Hashimoto added during the interview, "While keeping in mind the changes of the times, I constantly strive to challenge myself. In 2016, I hope that we'll be able to offer even more surprises to you all."
