Fans will see Carisi (Peter Scanavino) and Barba (Raul Esparza) plot their future in "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" season 18.

In the previous season, Carisi passed the bar. In the new season, he will still be working as a cop, but he will certainly think about his next move now that he has proven himself he can be a lawyer.

"He's exploring the possibility of maybe moving over to be a prosecutor and, ultimately, it will depend on what he is more passionate about," executive producer Rick Eid told The Hollywood Reporter of what he will be up to in "Law and Order: SVU" season 18.

"He's starting to sort of do the math on the differences between being a policeman and being a prosecutor: the different people, the different cultures," he went on to say.

This will especially be obvious in the third episode of "Law and Order: SVU" season 18, where Carisi will be interviewing with the Brooklyn District Attorney. Eid notes that there won't be an imminent resolution about this career move for Carisi. The new season will see him weighing things out while still feeding his love for being a cop.

As for Barba, it is looking like he is going the political route in "Law and Order: SVU" season 18. In the third episode, he will take on a case that will help him put in motion a political plan.

"There's an interesting dynamic between the judge and Barba because the judge is accusing Barba of using this case in his courtroom to advance his own political agenda," Eid explained.

"Maybe he's angling for the next move out there and what the future holds for him," the executive producer added, teasing a big change for Barba in "Law and Order: SVU" season 18.

Meanwhile, the new season will also feature actor Anthony Edwards as a guest star. The actor's appearance will reunite him with "ER" co-star Mariska Hargitay. His role is yet to be revealed.

"Law and Order: SVU" season 18 premieres Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
