'Law & Order: SVU' season 17 premiere; Olivia Benson named as TV's favorite female character

NBC

One of TV's longest-running crime drama series, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" is approaching its seventeenth season and part of its success comes from the fact that the show features stories based on powerful real-life stories.

The upcoming "Law & Order: SVU" season 17 will feature the chilling case of Robert Durst as part of its premiere episode, which will run for two hours.

It has not been kept a secret what the premiere episode will offer. SVU will air its version of Durst's story, complete with the dismembered body parts stuffed in garbage bags, the rich New Yorker, and the highlighted confession, which was caught on record when the killer thought no one was listening, as stated in Entertainment Weekly.

Season 17 premiere will feature Dallas Roberts making his comeback as the wealthy serial killer Dr. Greg Yates. E! Online also reported that Tamara Tunie and Elizabeth Marvel will appear as guest stars.

The premiere of the show's season 17 will not be the first to portray the story of Durst. "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" had David Thornton play a wealthy, cross-dressing murderer in 2002. In 2004, Henry Stram also played a cross-dressing, affluent character who killed his wife and neighbor in a "Law & Order" episode, reports Vulture.

"Law & Order: SVU" is now the longest-running crime drama series and it appears that the show is not losing fans.

In fact, the show's detective Olivia Benson, played by Mariska Hargitay, was picked as TV's favorite female lead.

Trailer Park recently conducted a survey to find out who among the many female characters on TV is the most loved, NY Daily News reported.

It seems "Game of Thrones'" Deanerys got nothing on Benson as the latter garnered 21 percent of the votes.

More of Detective Benson and surprising stories from SVU can be seen when the series returns on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
