A "Left 4 Dead 2" developer gave a glimmer of hope to fans by saying that a sequel is "unlikely but not impossible." It has been five years since the award-winning "Left 4 Dead 2" was released and fans have been speculating about its sequel for a long time. 

"It would only be possible if Valve wanted it to be that way," Turtle Rock developer Chris Ashton told PC Gamer. "It's their IP now, so they're in charge of where that goes. 'Left 4 Dead' was very much like 'Evolve' in that it's a game we wanted to make, it's a game that we sort of invented. It's where we cut our teeth on co-op. And so it's always going to be close to our hearts."  

"A lot of people would jump at the chance to work on 'Left 4 Dead' again in the future but ... it's probably ... I would say it's unlikely but not impossible," Ashton added. 

Valve, on the other hand, has not dropped any hint if the company has plans of releasing "Left 4 Dead 3." Last year, an alleged reference to the game was spotted in the company's changelog. No update has been sighted since. However, Valve is known for holding up the third installment of some of its popular game titles. 

Right now, Turtle Rock developers are busy working on the new game "Evolve" bound for release to Windows PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on Feb. 10, 2015. It similar to the "Left 4 Dead" games, but instead of people versus zombie-like infected people, "Evolve" features hunters and monsters. 

The "Left 4 Dead" series is a first-person shooting game first released in 2009. The more recent "Left 4 Dead 2" is set in a dystopian society and follows the four survivors fighting infected individuals exhibiting psychosis and zombie features. The survivors must overcome five campaigns and should escape the finale.
