LG G4 rumors: LG patents stylus for high-end phablet?

LG's new trademark patent for the LG G Pen suggests that the company is working on a phablet.LG

LG Electronics is rumored to shake up the phablet market by bringing in its contender in the arena. A new trademark filing hints that the company is working on its own smartphone-tablet hybrid device.

The South Korean tech company filed the LG G Pen patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office early this month. The name is a giveaway that the device is a stylus, although the filing did not specifically state that it will be a stylus of some sort.

According to the filing, the item is described as an electronic handheld device for "wireless receipt, storage and/or transmission of data and messages." The company also filed a trademark application for "G Scrawl," which is deemed as the software that allows the pen control on the screen of a smartphone. The details about the technology are still scarce, but it is speculated that LG will try to replicate Samsung's S Pen used in the Galaxy Note series.

It is still unannounced as to which handset the G Pen will make its debut. It is expected, however, that details about the accessory will be known in three months time. There is also a chance that it will appear alongside the upcoming LG G4 since there are murmurs that the handset will enter the phablet category and that it will make its initial appearance in March at the Mobile World Congress 2015.

In line with this, the company is also reportedly discontinuing the LG G Pro line, which is the phablet series of the company, due to low sales.  This, in turn, will allow the company to pour all of its resources to the LG G4.

The LG G4 is rumored to feature a 5.3-inch screen display with quad HD or 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution without bezels; a Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 chipset with 64-bit architecture or LG's own octa-core processor dubbed as Nuclun; 4 GB of RAM; the Android 5.0 Lollipop OS; a 20.7-megapixel rear camera with Optical Image Stabilization technology; 3500 mAh battery; and 32 GB and 64 GB storage variants with microSD slot for additional storage.
