LG G5 specs rumors: Smartphone to sport iris scanner, to be released early next year

Hot on the heels of the release of the LG G4 are rumors about the development of the flagship's successor dubbed as the LG G5. A report from South Korea revealed that the company is already making headway in the production of the new smartphone.

The same report claims that LG will make use of the emerging iris scanning technology for its future handset, and this aspect of the device will be the centerpiece of the LG G5 once it is introduced and it is what will separate it from Apple's and Samsung's offerings.

If accurate, this will prove that LG is drastically stepping up its game, skipping altogether the prevailing fingerprint scanning technology almost every top-of-the-line handset boasts. This feature has all the rage that even Google reportedly integrated it to the all-new Android M software.

Interestingly, though, not a single handset with such feature was ever released from LG. And if the LG G5 will indeed be sporting an iris scanner, then it looks like users and loyal patrons of the South Korea-based tech firm would no longer wait for a fingerprint-scanning LG handset.

It is said that the iris scanner is being developed by Irience, a firm based in South Korea that specializes on all things biometrics. According to the report, engineers are already working on increasing the scanning range from the standard 30 cm to arm's length, which is at 50 cm.

It is stated in the report that the LG G5 will be released early next year. It is too early to learn about the specs of the handset, though, but it is expected to be a major upgrade to the LG G4, not that the utilization of an iris scanner has not established that point already.

It is expected that the alleged device will don a more premium design. LG promised upon its introduction of the LG G4, which still makes use of plastic and faux leather back covers, that the next device will be sleek, chic, and premium.
