LG G5 specs: iris scanner among features?

The new LG G4.LG website

It was only in April when LG released its latest flagship, the LG G4, but in a matter of weeks, the spotlight has shifted to its highly-anticipated successor, the LG G5, which is rumored to house the latest trend in mobile protection and security.

Word on the street is that the smartphone will utilize iris scanning technology, which, simply put, allows the users to unlock and gain access to the handset by staring into the front camera. This advancement is seen in most handsets from tech firms in Asia.

The biometric fad for today's flagships is the fingerprint sensor. Samsung's Galaxy S6, Apple's iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, and HTC's One M9 all employ the system. LG, on the other hand, has reportedly always been a fan of iris scanners, and the possible inclusion of the feature has previously been brought up.

According to reports, LG has been working on the technology for quite some time now. Apparently, the company was supposed to incorporate the iris scanner on the LG G3, which did not transpire. The LG G4 did not have it either, which is why rumor mills are setting their eyes on the LG G5.

If the South Korea-based company really is hard at work in trying to make the iris scanning technology be the shining beacon of their handsets, then there is reason to believe that the LG G5 may be the device that will showcase what its maker has been working on all this time. Just like the fingerprint sensor, it took years before it was completely mastered.

The LG G5 won't be the only one to boast the sensor should it actually make it to the device. It looks like Samsung may be looking to employ it, too, on the Galaxy S7, its next flagship.

Meanwhile, other specs of the upcoming LG flagship include a hefty 20-megapixel rear-facing shooter, an impressive 4K display, 3D image capture, and wireless charging.
