'Longmire' season 5 start date, cast: next season rumored to have a September launch

Vic and Walt in Longmire season 5 Netflix

"Longmire" season 5 is nearing the end of its production and yet Netflix has yet to make an official announcement regarding its premiere date. However, according to a report from Parent Herald, it is more likely that the fifth season will launch by September given that season 4 was released in September 2015.

It is important to note that "Longmire" seasons 1 to 3 originated on cable TV until A&E cancelled the series. Netflix immediately picked up the series and renewed it for a fourth season. The fourth season eventually launched in September and it is this release schedule that fans speculate season 5 will follow.

Seasons 1 to 3 premiered in June or late May but the series at the time released episodes once per week. When season 4 premiered on Netflix all of the episodes were released at once to promote binge-watching. This also falls in line with how Netflix launches their other shows such as "Daredevil," "Orange Is the New Black" and "Narcos."

Despite the series nearing the end of production very little is known regarding its plot and characters.  However, the Hollywood Reporter did confirm that season 5 will continue introducing new characters as Dylan Walsh is set to play a recurring role in the series.

According to the report, Walsh is playing a character named Shane Muldoon, a boss of some unidentified organization and it is speculated that he will be one of the main villains for season 5. He is described as a charming, calm and calculative person which makes it hard to discern his true intentions and origins.

Season 4 ended with Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) and Dr. Donna Monaghan (Ally Walker) spending an intimate night together when someone suddenly breaks into Walt's home. It is still undetermined who this intruder might be but fans speculate the person may have some connections to Walsh's Shane Muldoon, such as being a hireling or assassin.
