Los Angeles Angels third baseman David Freese was placed on the 15-day disabled list after getting hit by a pitch and sustaining a broken right index finger in their 5-2 win against the Minnesota Twins last Wednesday.

Freese left the game in the fourth inning after getting hit by a pitch from the Twins' Mike Pelfrey.

The 32-year-old player even took first base following the hit but exited the game after consulting with Angels manager Mike Scioscia and went through X-ray with the results showing a non-displaced fracture, ESPN reported.

ESPN added that Freese will be wearing a splint for two weeks before going through another X-Ray, which will help set a timetable for his return.

It was not the first time for Freese to be injured. Last season, he was also hit by a pitch that broke his middle finger, making him sit out of 16 games.

"After that, it's just about me toughing it out — pain tolerance. It's kind of similar to last year," Freese said.

"I came back last year and got on a roll. I plan on doing the same," he added.

Freese is the Angels starting third baseman this season and is batting .240 with 11 home runs and 43 runs batted in (RBIs) in 90 games played.

Scioscia said Freese's injury and his time on the disabled list is a huge blow for the Angels.

"This is a big one, obviously. It's big, but it's just part of the season. We're going to have to continue to carry momentum from game to game," Scioscia said.

Meanwhile Freese said he will be a cheering his teammates on while trying to heal the injury being on the list.

"You want to be in the lineup. I'll just be a good cheerleader, come in wearing a big smile and be ready to go when I'm ready."

The Angels are currently streaking.  Even though their seven-game winning streak was snapped by the Twins last Thursday, they still hold a 54-41 record, which is the second best in the American League.
