Lucas Matthysse hopes to return big with help from Team Canelo

Argentine professional boxer Lucas Matthysse is gearing up for a big return to the ring after that disappointing performance against Viktor Postol back in October 2015.

Matthysse was believed to be distracted by the fact that a win over Postol would have placed him among the final list of candidates pegged to face Manny Pacquiao this April 9.

The Argentine would be surprisingly knocked out in the tenth round, losing the opportunity to become World Boxing Council (WBC) light welterweight title and the chance to get perhaps the biggest fight and payday of his career.

Things had been quiet on Matthysse since recently. "La Maquina" has come back to his senses and is now ready to take the ring once again and pick up the pieces.

His target date is April, although there is no word yet on whom he could possibly face. Even though that has yet to be settled, he is set to prepare anyway and is hoping to train alongside Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez' team.

Matthysse plans to change some things, the reason why he hopes that Team Canelo will allow him to train with them. But one thing he doesn't intend to change is his coach, Cuty Barrera.

Matthysse has had two not-so-impressive performances to date. Before that loss to Postol, he was lucky to come out the winner in the tightly contested match against Ruslan Provodnikov.

Even though it hasn't been made official, Matthysse is reportedly planning to move up to welterweight (147 pounds) but would certainly need big changes if he is to face the new opponents in the said weight class.

"The fact that I raised that to Mariano Arano (his promoter). I think I'm coming … not the end of my career, but I want to keep learning things continue superándome," Matthysse said to Univision.com.

If plans to move up to welterweight do materialize, it will be interesting to see how he can make believers out of critics. Citing how he struggled against Postol, it will be interesting to see how he fares with the likes of Errol Spence Jr. or Shawn Porter, as singled out by Boxing News 24.
