After the shocking explosion in the midseason finale, U.S. President Dalton's (Keith Carradine) administration will be facing a hurdle unlike anything it has never tackled before, as Russia decides to renege from the peace talks between the two countries.

In "Unity Node," CarterMatt reports that the sudden turn of events will push the communists to back out of the agreement that Dalton and Ostrov (Angela Gots) hammered during their talk in Switzerland. Does this mean the Russian Premier is dead after the blast that was meant to take out one of the pair? It certainly appears so, as Elizabeth (Téa Leoni) will once again be tapped to salvage the situation. Will she be able to stop the war that is brewing between the United States and Russia?

Last finale, Dalton and Ostrov met in Geneva to talk about possible reparations from the past actions of both sides. The POTUS agreed to lift economic sanctions on Russia and private individuals, with the exception of the terrorists. Ostrov agreed to restore the fuel supply to Eastern Europe in exchange. She likewise demanded that the United States issue a public apology to her country for the blackout and announce that they were not behind the attack on Air Force One.

Dalton and Elizabeth were sold with the first of Ostrov's demands, but not the one about the presidential plane. They then told Ostrov to sign the agreement, otherwise evidences of her hand on killing off her husband would be sent to the press. Ostrov had no choice but to acquiesce to what the U.S. contingents pressed for, if she still wanted to continue her reign in her country. When the deal was sealed, the party separated and got into their respective cars. That was when an unknown man sent an explosive to blow up one or both the departing vehicles.

"Madam Secretary" will return on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016, at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
