'Man of Steel 2' movie update: Plenty of time for Superman sequels -Henry Cavill

Henry Cavill — the actor who played Superman in "Man of Steel" and will continue to do so in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and other DC films for Warner Bros. — said that, although unnannounced at this point, there is likely to be more solo Superman films down the line.

When 2013's "Man of Steel" proved a success, it was widely believed that DC and Warner Bros. would move forward with a sequel. Instead, they decided to go with "Batman v Superman" and later revealed their movie release schedule, which, oddly, does not include any solo Superman or Batman films.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor stated that "Batman v Superman" is not a sequel to "Man of Steel" but is instead an introduction to Batman, the Justice League, and an expansion of the DC Cinematic Universe. When asked if there would be solo Superman films in the future, at least prior to 2020, the actor replied with the following:

"There's plenty of time for individual Superman sequels. He's a tough character to tell. People like the darker vigilante. I think it speaks to the human psyche more easily rather than the god-like being that we can't really understand. Once we have a more expansive universe we can delve more into the character of Superman and hopefully tell more stories."

According to a report from Screen Rant, this statement points out why filmmakers find it difficult to make a good Superman movie. The character is literally a god amongst humans and the only way for a film to have any conflict is for him to fight someone just as powerful as he is, like General Zod, Doomsday, or Brainiac.

This echoes a similar statement made by Marvel Studios a few years back regarding solo Hulk films, in that the character itself makes it difficult to make an entire movie around his story and conflicts.

"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" opens in theaters on March 25, 2016.
