Manny Pacquiao's return bout will be in the United States — Bob Arum

After revealing that boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has been medically cleared, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum adds another element to the possible comeback bout of the Filipino boxer/lawmaker by saying that Pacquiao's next match will be held in the United States.

Despite initially saying that he will not get into specifics until he gets the official medical clearance of Pacquiao from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the location of the bout comes a bit of a surprise.

The reason behind the preference in the United States apparently stems from pay-per-view (PPV) numbers. Arum compares scenarios if the fight were held in the Middle East or even perhaps in Macau, China. It will be recalled that Pacquiao had fought Brandon Rios back in November 2013 which he won via unanimous decision over at the Venetian Macau Resort & Hotel.

"We played around with having Manny fight in the Mideast. But if you do a fight in the Mideast, you lose half the pay per view. And the people we were talking to couldn't guarantee the live gate would make up for the loss on the pay per view, so it's not going to happen there," says Arum via the Las Vegas Review Journal.

At the moment, Amir Khan is at the top of Arum's list of possible opponents. However, it seems that despite that, Khan doesn't have a complete lock on being Pacquiao's next foe.

Other names in the running include that of Lucas Matthysse, Kell Brook, Terrence Crawford, and even Juan Manuel Marquez.

But as mentioned prior, Arum will hold off any plans until Pacquiao gets the official green light to return to boxing-related activities.

How about Floyd Mayweather Jr. whose last PPV numbers didn't turn out quite hot?

"It's obvious Mayweather isn't in the picture," Arum said. "I have no idea if Floyd's done. I don't know that Floyd knows if he's done," he added.

"Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if he's done, and I wouldn't be surprised if he comes back," the promoter also said.
