'Mario Kart 8' DLC release date: gamers in Europe may get the content first

Nintendo

It was previously reported that a Twitter post from Nintendo U.K. may be hinting at the release of a third DLC pack expansion for "Mario Kart 8" on the Wii U. However, this post may also be indicating that the DLC will not be launching worldwide simultaneously and is instead going to launch in Europe first.

According to Crossmap, the mere fact that the post was put up by Nintendo U.K. instead of the original Nintendo Japan or Nintendo U.S. accounts indicates that the European audience will be getting the DLC first while other regions will be getting it presumably some time later. In most cases, DLCs that are region-locked release in other countries about 30 days later.

If this proves true then this is potentially the first time that DLC content will be releasing in Europe first before it lands on American or Japanese game markets. For most Nintendo products, however, DLC content and new games often launch in Japan first.

It is possible that the developers for DLC 3 could be from Nintendo Europe and not directly in Japan. This means the DLC could launch in the UK, Italy, France and Germany before being launched anywhere else such as Canada, the US and Japan.

As for the DLC's rumored content, the Twitter post showcased the Kalimari Desert which was first featured in "Mario Kart 64." The track has since been revamped and re-featured in subsequent games in the franchise and has been notably added in "Mario Kart 7" on the Nintendo 3DS.

Fans speculate that this means DLC 3 would focus on remaking tracks from the older games in the franchise given that the first two DLC expansions did not. DLC 1 and DLC 2 instead brought in elements based on the "Animal Crossing" and "Legend of Zelda" series.

Nintendo has yet to confirm if the rumors are true or if they are even working on a new DLC pack at all.
