The image contains a screenshot of the desert race course from "Mario Kart 64" and contains the message "Good things come to those who wait. #MK8."

The last DLC for the game was released last April 2015, while the first one dropped in November 2014. The expansion pack contained "The Legend of Zelda" and "Animal Crossing" characters. The Kalamari Desert track was last released for "Mario Kart 7" for the Nintendo 3DS.

After the posting, fans were expecting that an announcement would take place at the recently concluded Electronic Entertainment Expo 2016. However, nothing was announced during the event related to the game.

Fans are also speculating that the upcoming DLC may contain other characters from Nintendo's other IP and there are still many to choose from. "Mario Kart 8" was originally released in May 2014 for the Wii U, where players can choose to be a character from the Mario franchise and drive a kart around various race tracks.
