Viewers can expect new characters to appear in the next episodes of Showtime's period drama series "Masters of Sex" season 3, Cartermatt reports.

In "The Excitement of Release," one of them will be introduced. Josh Charles will be taking the role of a perfumier who is eager to latch on Bill (Michael Sheen) and Ginny's (Lizzy Caplan) fame to propel his own career. His character will develop a keen interest in Ginny and her research. Will this lead to more interesting plots in the future?

Meanwhile, TV Guide reports that Bill's old pal Barton Scully (Beau Bridges) will also make a reappearance on the show. The former Washington University provost will reportedly offer Bill a job partnership that can have "long-lasting implications" for the latter's practice.

Also in episode 3, Bill and Libby's (Caitlin Fitzgerald) marital status will be on the rocks, as he starts to spend more time with Ginny and the public because of the publication of their book. Tessa (Isabelle Fuhrman) will also be affected by the new situation. Her mother's success puts her in a negative light at school.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Michelle Ashford revealed that the team behind "Masters of Sex" was aware of the growing criticisms that the show was not "reinventing" itself.

"I do sense that people are a little worried that somehow we've turned into some kind of weird family show. It's still very much grown-up subject matter," she said.

Ashford also acceded that season 3 brought a lot of changes in a short amount of time it premiered.

"I know we threw a lot of people in the first episode, and it's taking them a moment to get used to it. We're aware that viewers want continuity, so next year is not going to be 10 years down the road. We want to keep it together here for a bit."

"Masters of Sex" airs Sunday at 10 p.m. EST on Showtime.
