The reviews are out for the new movie "Maze Runner: The Death Cure," which received lukewarm feedback from critics who generally called it a competent film with a rather prolonged running time.

The action-adventure, which was directed by Wes Ball, received a muted 52 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a site that aggregates review scores from different entertainment sources. Here are what some of the pundits had to say.

Emily Yoshida from New York Magazine expressed, "This is the sort of action film where the bad guys often hold their fire for no discernible reason, and are terrible at dodging things, but if one suspends one's disbelief long enough, they're rewarded with a rollicking, highly competent popcorn movie."

In addition, Stephen Witty from Newark Star-Ledger stated, "Just when you think things are being wrapped up, they come unwrapped, and the picture goes on for another 40 minutes, prolonging your pain with a sadism that would make even the movie's sneering villain feel a bit guilty."

Lastly, Fionnuala Halligan from Screen International wrote, "The franchise puts itself, and viewers, to sleep."

The movie is the last in a trilogy and continues with Thomas's (Dylan O'Brien) quest to save his friends from the prison-laboratory run by Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson) and Janson (Aidan Gillen). Together with Newt (Thomas Sangster), Brenda (Rosa Salazar), Frypan (Dexter Darden), and others, the group must break into the legendary Last City, which is the most dangerous labyrinth of them all.

They must get through this deadly maze and rescue their friends and other survivors. If they are able to get out alive, Thomas and the others may get answers to questions they have been asking since they first encountered the maze.

"Maze Runner: The Death Cure" is set to premiere on Friday, Jan 26, in theaters nationwide.
