A memorial service will take place later today in tribute of the four men who died when a mine flooded in the Swansea Valley.

Philip Hill, 45, Garry Jenkins, 39, David Powell, 50, and Charles Breslin, 62, died when the Gleision Colliery, near Pontardawe, was overwhelmed by flood waters on September 15.

The service will be led by the Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, who grew up the son of a miner not far from the Gleision mine, near Cilybebyll.

The service at St Peter’s Church, Pontardawe, will also remember five-year-old Harry Patterson, who died in an accident involving the family car outside the family home in nearby Alltwen in the same week as the mining tragedy.

Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones will give the Oration. Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan and local MPs will also attend.

The service, which starts at 14:00 GMT on Friday, has been organised by Neath Port Talbot Council.
