Messing divorce guilt: "I wasn't able to give my son the fantasy" - Debra talks split with Daniel Zelman

Debra Messing opened up about her divorce from writer Daniel Zelman and spoke about her guilt in the latest issue of More magazine.

The 44-year-old was married to Zelman for 10 years before they filed for divorce in June 2012.

"We both wanted it to last forever, and it's a sad thing that it wasn't able to go the course," the actress said, according to PEOPLE "Part of me will always contend with guilt that I wasn't able to give my son the fantasy that my parents were able to give me."

The couple have a 9-year-old son, Roman.

"We really tried," she says. "We made sacrifices and compromises, and in the end we both realized that we like the day-to-day domestic life."

Messing is best known for her TV roles in "Will & Grace", "Starter Wife" and "Smash." She won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2003 for her performance in "Will & Grace."

Messing and Zelman both attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Zelman is an executive producer of the FX drama series "Damages."
