Upcoming action-survival game "Metal Gear Survive" is currently in its beta stage. The game is also free-to-play for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners who want to help out with the testing phase.

According to Game Spot, the free beta testing phase will last until Jan. 21 and will include two maps to explore, three missions to play through, and two live events to participate in. Aside from that, players who do decide to participate in the beta will be in for a treat when the game is finally released in full. Those who helped out will receive in-game bonuses. However, they will have to purchase the full game when it is finally out on both consoles.

"Metal Gear Survive" is going to be a third person game set in a large map that players can explore whenever they feel like it. The game will feature to modes: cooperative and solo. In cooperative mode, up to four people can team up and explore the world or complete quests together. Meanwhile, solo mode has the player work with three other AI companions that take orders from the player.

In "Metal Gear Survive," the main focus of the game is survival. The protagonist and other soldiers are one day sucked up into a wormhole in the sky. The strange occurrence transports them to a weird world infested by zombie-like creatures. The player protagonist must complete a series of quests to transport himself back home, all while running away from zombies and trying to stay alive.

Kotaku gives a more in depth summary of the latest game's events, and the quests available in the beta. According to Kotaku, generators and parts must be collected – it is all out chaos, something quite different compared to the other games in the "Metal Gear" franchise.

"Metal Gear" is a series of action-stealth games created by Hideo Kojima, and the first game was released in 1987. Since then the franchise has grown and published multiple games. Their latest upcoming game "Metal Gear Survive" is slated for a March 2018 release.
