11 people have been abducted in a mass kidnapping in Mexico. The victims were allegedly taken from a bar in Mexico City's Zona Rosa in broad daylight on Sunday.

The mass abduction has sparked panic and fear to residents in the area which is normally said to be calm.

The kidnappings took place some time between 10 a.m. and midday just off the city's main boulevard, the Paseo de la Reforma.

Among those abducted is a young 16-year-old boy. Four young women and six young men have also been taken captive as their parents and family desperately urge authorities to find them.

Family members marched Thursday morning from the Interior Department building to the Zocalo, the city's main square, demanding to see the bar's surveillance video.

Josefina Garcia, mother of 19-year-old Sanchez Garcia, said: "How could so many people have disappeared, just like that, in broad daylight? The police say they don't have them, so what, the earth just opened up and swallowed them?" Sanchez is her only son, according to AP.

Although 11 have been reported as missing in the area, some reports say as many as 15 or 16 could have been abducted.

Mexico City's chief prosecutor Rodolfo Rios said investigators are not sure what exactly took place, AP reports. "We aren't sure what exactly occurred. No witness has come forward to say anything about any armed gang."

Many believe that the kidnappings could be related to organized crime but there is no known motive for the incident as of yet.
