Microsoft now working on latest Xbox Elite wireless controllers, based on leaked images; Possible launch expected at E3 2018

The Microsoft Xbox Elite wireless controller for Xbox OneXbox website

Microsoft has already launched the upgraded version of its vanilla Xbox One console, the Xbox One X, and it appears that the Redmond-based tech firm also has plans to refresh its special Xbox Elite wireless controller. First introduced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2015, the new and improved Xbox Elite 2018 has been spotted recently in leaked photos.

While the company itself did not mention any plans to update the Xbox Elite, several leaked images of the alleged wireless controller have been posted on the Chinese forum site Baidu. The controllers shown in the photos share the same design as the current Xbox Elite, although there are some noticeable changes, like the inclusion of a USB-C port for charging. The post also claims that the new Xbox Elite has Bluetooth support updated for Windows 10.

The 2018 Microsoft Xbox Elite is shown to sport three-level Hair Trigger locks, a three-profile switch, plus key travel for paddles that is made longer than in the current model. Meanwhile, The Verge also noted the adjustable tension mechanism included for the wireless controller's thumbsticks, which supports the leaked patent filing by Microsoft back in December that involves a new adjustable lock design for an Xbox controller's thumbsticks. The leaked Xbox Elite photos also match the patent drawing, particularly the three LED light indicators.

Another leaked photo, this time coming from Reddit user EDDS86, shows the latest Microsoft Xbox Elite wireless controller in its full appearance. This shot reveals the updated grip sections of the controller, which could be Microsoft's answer to the users' complaints regarding the grip sections wearing off over time, according to Eurogamer.

The Verge's insider source claims that the Reddit post in question indeed shows a genuine render of an Xbox controller. However, it remains to be seen if Microsoft will push through with this new wireless controller and launch it as the 2018 iteration of the Xbox Elite. If ever, the new Xbox Elite controller might be showcased at this year's E3 this June.
