There is an on-going debate on whether or not Microsoft would be releasing their flagship laptop device — the Microsoft Surface Book 2 — within the year. The majority of the reports have pegged the device's release to be during an alleged big launch event slated for next month, while other reports have speculated a more realistic 2017 release date.

The basis for the possible October release date is the company's practice of sticking to a regular release pattern, which it has done so for their other products. The first generation 2-in-1 laptop computer was previously released back in October 2015, which means that if Microsoft were to stick to the same pattern, the next generation Surface Book 2 laptop could also be released during the same month this year.

Several reports are, however, skeptical of an October release for the new Surface Book, as Microsoft will likely have to intentionally delay the device's release in order for it to incorporate more advanced hardware and software features.

One of the components that Microsoft is likely eyeing for its new flagship laptop is Intel's latest Kaby Lake processor. The next generation CPU is reportedly going to be exponentially faster than its Skylake-based predecessor and at the same time consume significantly less power. The CPU is scheduled to be released in the later part of the year, which means that a 2017 release date is more likely.

Another reason for an unlikely October release is that the company has not yet completed the development of its latest Windows 10 update, dubbed the Redstone 2 update. It would, therefore, make more sense for the company to launch their latest laptop alongside the new operating system update and the new processor if they truly want to offer a device that has all the latest software and hardware features.

The Surface Book 2 is marketed by Microsoft as a full-fledged laptop, which means that it is expected to be coming with high-end specs which might include a whopping 16 GB of RAM, a terabyte of storage space, and possibly a 4K resolution display.
