Microsoft Surface Pro 4 release date, specs: Intel's Skylake processor among features?

One of Microsoft's upcoming offerings could be sporting some interesting new hardware, as the Surface Pro 4 will reportedly come equipped with Intel's Skylake processor.

Rumors that the new device will be using the Skylake processor are significant for at least a couple of reasons.

First off, Intel's Skylake processor has been designed to work even without needing the constant attention of fans to cool it down, and what this means is that the Surface Pro 4 could be much thinner than its predecessor, according to the Cubic Lane. A fanless design would allow Microsoft to slim down the Surface Pro 4 even more, although it's unclear if that is the direction they want to take for the device.

Next, the Surface Pro 4 using the Skylake processor also means that the new device may no longer suffer from becoming too warm during continued usage. Having an electronic device get a bit too hot is not ideal, so the addition of any piece of equipment that can work against that would be helpful.

If the Surface Pro 4 does not end up using the Skylake processor, then Intel's Broadwell variant is also a possibility.

Rumors are also suggesting that there will be two different versions of the Surface Pro 4, with one model sporting a 12-inch display and another one that's a bit larger at 14 inches. The 12-inch model would be similar in size to the Surface Pro 3.

As for when consumers can reasonably expect to officially see the new Surface Pro 4, they may not have to wait for long as the new device will reportedly be announced by October, according to The Verge. The website has confirmed that Microsoft will be holding a launch event for some new offerings, although the company has yet to announce what they will be featuring.

The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are also expected to be featured at the October event.
