Micrsoft Surface Pro 5 release date: Next gen hybrid will have a stylus

The Microsoft Surface Pro 5 will be getting an additional accessory when launched, a battery powered stylus pen.

Patently Mobile points to a patent filed by Microsoft at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office showing designs of a battery-powered Surface Pen, a stylus that provides active functionality for Surface Pro users. The Surface Pen design also shows a charging dock that is said to be bundled with the Surface Pen, which will also serve as a casing to avoid misplacing the Surface Pen.

"As a stylus may be easily misplaced due to the typical size and shape of the stylus (e.g., a thin, rod-like shape with at least one tapered end), the stylus charger may take the form of a dock that holds the stylus in a particular location during charging and/or while the stylus is not being used," Microsoft said to Patently Mobile.

Given that the size of the pen seems to be thicker than the Surface Pro, the stylus may come as an accessory and will not be inserted into the Surface Pro like usual pens that are contained in the device as well.

The Surface Pen is rumoured to launch together with the next generation of the Microsoft Surface Pro- the Surface Pro 5.

In other related news, another accessory of the Surface Pro 4- the power cord- is being called back by Microsoft after users have reported concerns with over heating. In a statement given to ZDNet, a Microsoft spokesperson said, "As a result of damage caused by AC power cords being wound too tightly, twisted or pinched over an extended period of time, a very small proportion of Surface Pro customers have reported issues with their AC power cord. We will be releasing details of how customers can obtain a free replacement cable shortly."

Microsoft has not yet confirmed when and whether they will be launching a Surface Pro 5 this year.
