Miguel Cotto next fight rumors: Freddie Roach lines up possible opponents

Miguel Cotto is still silently on a sabbatical, but trainer Freddie Roach is not wasting any time looking for his next possible opponent.

Roach had earlier contemplated on possibly pitting Cotto against Juan Manuel Marquez, but that would depend on the actual state of El Dinamita.

Marquez has not fought since 2014 and the reason behind it is reportedly due to his knees. Already at 42, Marquez has not officially retired and would be open to face Cotto. But for that to happen, there are things to consider such as the catchweight where both will meet.

Moving on, Marquez was not the only boxer Roach had in mind. Big name fighters such as Kell Brook, Billy Joe Saunders, and Liam Smith were also on the list, although it may depend on their availability.

Brook will be defending his International Boxing Federation (IBF) title next month against Kevin Bizier and is working on a possible fight with Amir Khan this June. The fight with Khan has yet to gain any ground.

Saunders was earlier considered to fight Gennady Golovkin, but it seems that the Briton wants more money on the table. Against Cotto, it could likely be the same scenario to make a match materialize.

Smith has been a popular name lately. He was reportedly one of the fighters Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez is considering for his May 7 fight, but nothing has been set on stone as well.

Someone who was not on the list is interested though — Demetrius Andrade.

Andrade was, apparently, following the possible Cotto vs. Marquez talks. With no certainty on that matchup, Andrade is tossing in his name into the mix if Roach and Cotto are interested.

There is no official word yet on when Cotto will make his ring return; but with the list of fighters interested in facing him, the Puerto Rican is certainly not short on possible opponents.
