As the Senate conducts its hearing on Mike Pompeo's appointment as Secretary of State, his church in Kansas has been praying for his strength as the confirmation process continues.

On Sunday, April 15, assistant pastor Rev. Warren Snyder of the Eastminster Presbyterian Church led church members in prayers for the former CIA director. Tapped to replace Sec. Rex Tillerson, Pompeo used to be a deacon and Sunday school teacher in his church community.

"We ask that you would be glorified in his life, that you would be lifted up, that you would strengthen him and his wife [Susan] and his son [Nick] as he goes through this process," the pastor uttered. "Give him strength. Help him to stand."

Rev. Stan Van Den Berg, the church's senior pastor, also asked members to pray for Pompeo on Wednesday. In a post on the church's official site, Van Den Berg wrote: "Mike has enemies because of his faith who may try to paint him in a poor light and make it difficult for him to reach the Secretary of State position."

President Donald Trump, however, expressed confidence that his choice would be confirmed despite some opposition from his party. Republican Sen. Rand Paul, in particular, worries about Pompeo's advocacy for the war in Iraq but the President said that Paul has "never let me down." Trump has also initiated a meeting with Pompeo and Paul at Capitol Hill after the former returns from his trip to North Korea.

Pompeo was one of the first cabinet members that Trump chose to work for him when he assumed his post as the President of the United States in January 2017. Pompeo's confirmation then had little opposition from the Senate but, according to reports, those who previously confirmed him as CIA director are second-guessing his new assignment as Secretary of State.
