'Minecraft' for Nintendo Wii U, 3DS: Mojang still open to possibility

Minecraft Mojang

In an interview with MCV during the 2015 Minecon event, Mojang COO and "Minecraft" developer Vu Bui stated that there are no current hindrances for "Minecraft" to appear on a Nintendo console, indicating that a Wii U port or even a Nintendo NX port could be on the way sometime in the future.

"Minecraft" was launched for the PC back in 2011, and since then, it has made its way to Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and Sony's PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita. The game is notably not available on Nintendo consoles such as the 3DS and the Wii U, and fans have come to believe that it would never happen since Microsoft acquired "Minecraft" developer Mojang in 2014.

However, Bui explained in the report that Microsoft's ownership of Mojang does not hinder their options in porting the game over to other platforms.

"If I had my way, we'd be on everything," Bui stated in the interview. "We want to continue to be available to all players, and that means being on new platforms because everyone uses something different. I've never heard a reason why we haven't ended up on Wii U or 3DS. It just hasn't happened yet."

The statement confirms that the company is open to doing a port for Nintendo consoles. However, in a report last year, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Shinya Takahashi hinted that the company isn't excited about bringing "Minecraft" to their console because it would interfere with their first-party titles.

As Takahasi stated, "Minecraft" isn't as big in Japan as it is in the United States. Bringing it to the Wii U or the Nintendo NX would make the game more popular but it might also interfere with sales of "Super Mario Maker" and other Nintendo titles that are similar to "Minecraft."

At least, the doors aren't shut tight and the release of the Nintendo NX in 2016 could open more opportunities for Mojang to port the hit video game over to Nintendo.
