Mobile World Congress 2016: Lenovo's 'surprise' turns out to be Vibe K5, Vibe K5 Plus

Tech manufacturer Lenovo previously teased an upcoming flagship smartphone, to be unveiled at this year's Mobile World Congress. Fans speculated that the tech giant may be teasing about a global release of its recently launched Lemon 3 iteration, and even a bigger Lemon 3 Plus.

However, it turns out that Lenovo was going to unveil something else.

At the ongoing event in Barcelona, Lenovo has just announced its newest flagship smartphones, the Vibe K5 and Vibe K5 Plus. However, fans who are waiting for Lenovo's next premium flagship will be disappointed, as observers said that the two new iterations are additions to Lenovo's entry-level smartphone series.

Although the two new Lenovo phones are budget-friendly editions, some fans also point out that this further cements rumors of Lenovo sticking to its Vibe series as entry-level and above-average iterations, and making its newly acquired Motorola Mobility products the company's top-tier, premium flagships, starting with the Moto X brand.

The new Lenovo Vibe K5 and K5 Plus have almost exactly the same design and specs and only differ in display resolution and processor, notes Gadgets by NDTV. According to the industry follower, the Vibe K5, considered the base model, has a 5-inch LCD HD display and is powered by a Snapdragon 405 processor with 2 GB of RAM. Meanwhile, the Vibe K5 Plus has a Snapdragon 616 chipset with 2 GB of RAM. Although it also features a 5-inch display, the Vibe K5 Plus offers a much clearer and brighter display with 1080p resolution.

Aside from these differences, the rest of the specs seem similar for the two. GSM Arena lists both iterations as having 13MP main cameras on the back and 5MP selfie shooters on the front, dual-SIM and microUSB connectivity and carries Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box.
