A team from Christian charity Habitat for Humanity is challenging visitors to this Bank Holiday weekend’s Greenbelt festival to help build a home in four days.

The staff and volunteers from Habitat for Humanity want 1,235 people to put their name on a brick and build up a mock house.

Each brick that is pledged will prompt an anonymous donor to contribute financially to Habitat for Humanity’s goal of a world where every person has a safe, decent place to live.

Visitors to the charity’s stand in the Tented Village at the Greenbelt Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse will find both a mock house under construction and a shack.

The shack shows the living conditions similar to those endured by many millions of people around the world.

Habitat for Humanity’s National Director Ian Walkden said, “This year the theme of Greenbelt is Dreams of Home, and by dedicating a brick people can actually help a family to achieve their dreams of a decent home.

"Visitors to Greenbelt can, with a simple action that takes five minutes, help a family to escape the most horrendous living conditions.”

International charity Habitat for Humanity estimates that 1.6 billion people live in inadequate housing in the world’s shanty towns, slums and rural villages.

The average cost of a safe, decent home in the developing world is just £1,235.
