James Wan, the man behind several box-office hits like "Insidious" and "Furious 7," is now tasked to produce the reboot of the "Mortal Kombat" film under New Line Cinema. 

Tracking Board exclusively revealed that the popular filmmaker, screenwriter, and movie producer stepped in to revive the plans of creating another "Mortal Kombat" film adaptation, which was first announced in September 2011. 

The film was supposed to be helmed by dance choreographer-turned-movie director Kevin Tancharoen after he directed the "Mortal Kombat: Legacy" Web series. However, Tancharoen announced in October 2013 that he would no longer work on the new movie version of the fantasy martial arts fighting game .

Tancharoen and New Line Cinema used to have big plans for the "Mortal Kombat" reboot after the success of the 1995 film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. The film outfit's president and CEO Toby Emmerich earlier said that working with Tancharoen for the planned film reboot would greatly improve the franchise especially after the great reception of the public to the succeeding games. 

"I remembered the old films, which I don't think left people hungry for more," Emmerich told the Entertainment Weekly back in 2011. "But when you look at how well the game was doing and you look at what Kevin did with it just on his own, you don't have to squint too hard to see how it might make a good movie." 

But after the delays of the film production due to budget constraints, Tancharoen eventually opted to bow out of the project. 

The script for the "Mortal Kombat" film reboot was written by "Mortal Kombat: Legacy" scriptwriter Oren Uziel and "The Expendables" screenwriter Dave Callaham. It reportedly focuses on the life of a male protagonist who gets involved with an inter-dimensional fighting tournament between the strongest warriors of Earth against the creatures from the Outworld. After learning about his potential to fight the evil forces that are bent on destroying Earth, he must now win in the combat tournament called Mortal Kombat. 

There is no word yet regarding the production schedule of the "Mortal Kombat" movie reboot, as well as its possible release date.
