Fans are excited that developer NetherRealm Studios seems to be working on a new expansion for its "Mortal Kombat X" title. However, the new DLC will mostly be a product of fan feedback when it comes out. An unofficial poll by the studio's Ed Boon gathered that fans prefer a "Kombat Pack 3" rather than a sequel at this point.

Why is an expansion more popular than a direct "Mortal Kombat 11" sequel?

The first two "Mortal Kombat" DLC expansions added significant content to the game. Aside from the new skins and in-game features, the first and second "Kombat Pack" DLCs added quite a number of new characters to the game's roster.

One of the reasons that a continuous "Kombat Pack" is requested by fans is that they seem to have some preferred characters they want to see in-game, since the DLCs added fighters even outside of the "Mortal Kombat" franchise. Cross-over characters that are now playable in "Mortal Kombat X" include Jason Vorhees from "Friday the 13th" movies, Leatherface from "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and the Xenomorph from "Aliens."

Indeed, many fans are still waiting for their favorite non-franchise characters to make it as a "Mortal Kombat X" fighter. According to ThisGenGaming, one of the character that may make it as a cross-over fighter is The Joker from the "Injustice: Gods Among Us" storyline by DC. While it is still uncertain, having a DC character in the game is certainly a possibility since a cross-over has already been done. Previously, Scorpion – a "Mortal Kombat" franchise veteran – was included in the "Injustice" plot.

Meanwhile, it is also too early to tell if there will be a "Mortal Kombat 11," so a "Kombat Pack 3" is the next best thing to come out. "Mortal Kombat X" has just enjoyed its first-year anniversary, and since the current game keeps on getting numerous fixes and updates, a direct sequel may be too soon.
