Fresh from the success of this year's Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus, Motorola is now reportedly working on its next generation of G series.

The report comes from popular tipster Evan Blass who claimed via Twitter that the Lenovo-owned company is launching three G models in 2018. The series will include the Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus, and Moto G6 Play.

"Next year will see the return of Play to Lenovo's Moto G lineup in the form of the Moto G6 Play (alongside the G6 and G6 Plus)," Blass wrote.

If the report is accurate, 2018 marks the return of the Play model to the Moto G lineup after a short period of absence. Motorola last included a Play handset in its G4 series in mid-2016. Per Android Headlines, it is a smartphone variant that runs on an unmodified version of Android with a guarantee of speedy feature upgrades.

Blass did not reveal further details, but the publication notes that Google had ended the Google Play Edition (GPE) program in 2015. This means the Moto G6 Play, if released, will not have any association with the GPE program. Instead, it will simply continue the series that was shelved last year.

It is unclear how the 2018 model will differ from its predecessor, but G Play editions usually sport smaller displays. They also have lower resolution, less powerful system-on-chip (Soc), less random access memory (RAM), and lower price tags. This suggests that the G6 Play could be the cheapest among the three upcoming handsets.

The lineup's specs and designs are still a mystery. However, Digital Trends predicts that the Moto G6 and Moto G6 Plus will have the same screen dimensions as the Moto G5 and G5 Plus, respectively. The former is 5 inches while the latter is bigger at 5.2 inches. Both boast the same Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution.

Motorola will most likely offer upgraded processors, too. The Moto G6 Plus could sport the recently unveiled Snapdragon 636, meaning better camera performance, louder and crisper speakers, and faster transfers for the phone.

It remains to be seen how much the handset will cost. Regardless, there is a good chance they will launch sometime in the next few months.
