When Lenovo acquired Motorola Mobility, fans expected that the tech manufacturer will overhaul the Moto line. However, Lenovo has already confirmed that it will be continuing some iterations. Speculations suggest that one of these is the Moto X and that the 2016 edition may even have flagship specs just like the recently released Moto Z.

In a previous interview with Android Police, Lenovo hinted that instead of an overhaul, the flagship and mid-range lineups under the old Moto brand will continue. Lenovo has already done this with the 2016 Moto G and Moto E iterations and is rumored to be launching a 2016 version of the Moto X lineup.

However, although Lenovo already confirmed the 2016 Moto X, some are saying that it may be relegated to an above-average lineup, since the flagship has already been taken over by Lenovo's new Moto Z handsets.

Lenovo seems keen to continue the flagship status of the Moto X, though. The company stated, "Moto X is alive and well. In fact, Moto X Force recently launched in multiple new markets around the world. Moto X and Moto Z do share some great qualities, but they ultimately provide different experiences and make our portfolio more robust for consumers looking for the perfect smartphone to fit their needs."

The "difference experience" may be hinged on how Lenovo designed its new Moto Z series. While the 2016 Moto X is expected to retain its design and top-tier specs sheet, it will lack the add-ons that the Moto Z lineup has, in terms of having module accessories called MotoMod.

As for when the 2016 Moto X can be expected, Lenovo has yet to provide specific details on the new flagship. However, given that some of the competitors are gunning for a late 2016 release for their flagship lineups, Lenovo may be thinking of revealing the new Moto X by September at the earliest.
