Previously, it was hinted that Lenovo would be rebranding the Moto lineup as its first decision since acquiring Motorola Mobility. Reportedly, the company would discontinue the Moto X lineup and release a new Moto Z flagship instead.

However, it is now confirmed that the Moto X lineup will remain for the time being and will even launch new iterations this year.

According to Android Police, Lenovo has confirmed that there will be no transition between the 2016 editions of the Moto X and Moto Z. Rather, the two lineups will be launched separately, since the two are supposed to cater to different niches. In an email sent to the industry follower, Lenovo stated, "Moto X and Moto Z do share some great qualities, but they ultimately provide different experiences and make our portfolio more robust for consumers looking for the perfect smartphone to fit their needs."

While note much has been said, it seems that the Moto Z will be taking over as the premium flagship of the Moto lineup, with the Moto X relegated to being a lower line. The statement added, "Tech-hungry consumers who are looking to get a brand-new set of experiences from their smartphone will turn to Moto Z and Moto Mods."

Moto Mods are the add-on modules that the Moto Z lineup will be compatible with. According to rumors, Lenovo has expanded on the idea of modular design from the recently launched LG G5 and also offer add-ons for the Moto Z lineup.

Meanwhile, although Lenovo has yet to come out with the official specs sheet, rumors have also placed the Moto Z lineup to carry top-tier specs, since the line will be the flagship of the new Moto by Lenovo. Reportedly, the flagship will feature a Snapdragon 820 processor and at least 4GB of RAM, a fingerprint scanner and USB Type-C port.
