A month ago, the tech world was abuzz with the news that the shiny, new Moto Z series was all set to replace the Moto X range. However, recent reports confirm otherwise. The Moto X series will continue to stay on the shelves.

Android Police mentions a direct quote from Motorola, which states, "Moto X is alive and well. In fact, Moto X Force recently launched in multiple new markets around the world. Moto X and Moto Z do share some great qualities, but they ultimately provide different experiences and make our portfolio more robust for consumers looking for the perfect smartphone to fit their needs."

In fact, as Vine Report mentions, Motorola is likely to release a new phone in this series – the Moto X 2016. This smartphone falls into the mid-range category, and a listing on GFXBench gives the detailed specs of the upcoming model.

One of the most impressive features of the Moto X 2016 is the 15-megapixel rear camera, which is coupled with a 7-megapixel front-facing camera that is capable of 1080p, full HD recordings. According to the listing, the model runs on Android 6.0, and has a 4.6 inch display screen. The octa-core CPU clocks in at 2.1 GHz. The memory capacity stands at 2.7 GB, while the phone's storage supports 24 GB.

On the flipside, the smartphone can hold only one SIM card, and does not support features such as an altimeter, a barometer, a thermometer, or a heart rate detector. However, since these features are unimportant for most smartphone users, ardent Moto X enthusiasts will no doubt rush to lay their hands on the 2016 version.

Although a definitive release date has not been officially announced, Science World Report speculates that the device may be available during the later part of the year.
