With Lenovo revealing a new flagship lineup with the Moto Z series, will the Moto X 2016 launch with top-tier specs?

Lenovo has already confirmed that although there is a new flagship lineup in the Moto Z series, the company still hopes to continue the Moto X, and there may be one or two 2016 editions in the pipeline. Hinting that the 2016 Moto X may be a co-flagship, with top-tier specs, Lenovo says to Android Police, "Moto X and Moto Z do share some great qualities, but they ultimately provide different experiences and make our portfolio more robust for consumers looking for the perfect smartphone to fit their needs."

However, Lenovo has yet to confirm if the Moto X 2016 will launch with top-tier specs, since the statement continues that, "Tech-hungry consumers who are looking to get a brand new set of experiences from their smartphone will turn to Moto Z and Moto Mods." This means that should the Moto X 2016 launch later this year, it will come out without modular add-ons, and the design may be more "regular" much like the previous Moto X iterations. In addition, the statement seems to indicate that instead of flagship specs – which the Moto Z's new design and MotoMod support already addresses – the Moto X will instead be relegated to a mid-range lineup.

Just recently, a supposed specs sheet for a new Moto device has circulated online, reportedly spotted on GeekBench. The new Moto device with model number XT1635-01 carries a Snapdragon 625 chipset, 3GB of RAM, and features a 5.5-inch display with 1080p resolution. However, it remains to be seen if this will be the new 2016 edition of a refreshed Moto X lineup, since observers note that the leaked specs may be for an upcoming, modest version of the Moto Z series, the Play edition.
