Moto Z Play release date: device ready to ship soon? 5.5-inch display seen in leaked prototype

According to rumors, Lenovo will be taking a page off the previous Moto X lineup and will also release a Play version of the current-gen Moto Z series.Motorola U.S.

Lenovo has already unveiled the Moto Z and Moto Z Force flagships. However, getting the idea from the previous Moto X, the new flagship will also get a Moto Z Play edition, according to supposed leaks spotted online.

Reportedly, the upcoming Moto Z Play has been first spotted in a Zauba listing, as Lenovo has already shipped some prototypes of the new flagship for testing. The Zauba listing revealed a 5.5-inch display. This led observers to wonder if the upcoming Moto Z Play, being a more modest version, will also come out with support for MotoMods. The flagship Moto Z and Moto Z Force, having the same dimensions, come with a modular design that lets users expand hardware features with accessories called MotoMods. The add-ons are connected via pins on the back of the device, a different approach to the modular design first used by the current-gen LG flagship, the G5.

Meanwhile, another sighting for the Moto Z Play has been made, this time on benchmark website AnTuTu.

According to the specs list, the upcoming Moto Z Play will be the step-down, mid-range version of the flagship series, carrying an above-average Snapdragon 625 chipset with an octa-core CPU and Adreno 506 GPU. The Moto Z Play is expected to come out in at least two versions, since the AnTuTu listing revealed that there will be a base model with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage, as well as a step-up variant with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. Both versions will come out with a 16MP camera setup on the back, while the front camera features a 5MP assembly. The listing also revealed that the Moto Z Play will come out with Android Marshmallow, and is expected to be updated to Android Nougat in the future.
