The first season of "Mr. Robot" proved to be a hit as the show received critical acclaim and was nominated for multiple awards. Earlier this month, the USA series won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series -- Drama, beating out "Outlander," "Empire," "Narcos" and award show favorite "Game of Thrones."

In the finale, Elliott (Rami Malek) learned that Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) is not real and that he came to be because Elliott made him up. For season 2, showrunner Sam Esmail said that the focus will be on Elliott as he tries to navigate his life now that he knows that Mr. Robot is not real.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Esmail said, as quoted by Entertainment Weekly, that a lot more backstory will be shown and that the timeline will get a little clearer in season two.

"It really is about Elliott trying to reconcile what this means in seeing Mr. Robot," said Esmail. "It's about a guy who becomes aware of this delusion he's been having."

Knowing that he made up Mr. Robot will certainly be something that Elliott will have a lot of difficulty dealing with since he suffers from social anxiety disorder and clinical depression, and the way he analyzes things is often fueled by extreme paranoia.

Now that it has been revealed that Slater's character isn't real, fans are wondering whether the actor will not be appearing in the second season. While the showrunner did not say whether Slater will be back for season 2, he teased that the next installment will be all about what Elliot does next after this huge revelation.

Malek also spoke with Entertainment Weekly during the magazine's SAG Awards party and said that the cast has scheduled to gather to read through the first half of the upcoming season.

"We're going to shoot everything as if we're shooting a movie," he said, adding that Esmail will be directing all 10 episodes of the new season.

A premiere date for season 2 of "Mr. Robot" has yet to be announced.
