Things will continue to be difficult for Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) when the hit USA Network series "Mr. Robot" returns for its second season sometime in 2016.

After the cliffhanger at the end of the freshman installment of the drama-thriller, fans are rabid for scraps of spoilers on what is to become of the young hacker and the fsociety. Vulture caught up with the Malek and showrunner Sam Esmail to ask them about the premise of season 2 and they each gave hints on what to expect for next year. According to the actor, Elliot's condition would take a turn for the worse, as he was still reeling from the events that took place in his life.

Last season, his girlfriend Shayla (Frankie Shaw) died even after he did his best to save her. This led Elliot to go deeper in his depression and take drugs to make him forget. Portraying a beaten up Elliot was reportedly an emotionally draining experience for Malek that he even asked his agents to postpone other works they have lined up for him. During the Independet Feature Project (IFP) Gotham Independent Film Awards, the actor explained his reasons for this request.

"I will say this, it doesn't get any easier for any one of the characters on the show — especially myself; After [Sam] pitched me this season, I called my agents and said, I don't really feel inclined to do anything between now and then. Because it's going to require a lot of energy," he said.

Meanwhile, Esmail let slip that BD Wong, who played Whiterose, would return for season 2. The mysterious character was last seen sharing cigars and liquor with Philip Price (Michael Cristofer) of Evil Corp in what was supposed to be a members-only country club. Esmail said Wong had an "amazing" first season and that he would be a fool not to bring him back. As for Elliot's father Edward (Christian Slater), Crossmap reports that he will be back for the upcoming installment, but only in flashback scenes.

"Mr. Robot" Season 2 is set to premiere sometime in 2016.
