Police officers in Utah say a voice from an unknown source helped them to save a baby girl in trouble this week.

The cops didn't initially see the baby in a submerged car under a bridge in Spanish Fork on Sunday, but heard a woman's voice calling for help.

"We could see a person in the front seat and then we heard a voice saying, 'Help me, we're in here.' It was clear as day," Spanish Fork Police Officer Tyler Beddoes recounted.

"We replied back 'hang in there, we're trying what we can.'"

Inside the upside down red Dodge sedan were Jennifer Groesbeck, 25, and her 18-month-old daughter, Lily. The pair had been in near-freezing water for 14 hours after crashing into a cement barrier and going over a bridge around 10:30pm. A fisherman later spotted the car.

Jennifer was found dead in the driver's seat when emergency officials arrived. Lily, still in her car seat, was unconscious but alive.

"We could see her eyes fluttering so there was some life but as far as movements or consciousness there was nothing that we could see," Beddoes told the New York Daily News on Monday.

The four responding officers and three firefighters flipped the car over, and formed an assembly line to get the baby back to land.

The officers, who all heard the woman's voice calling for help, had no explanation for the supernatural experience.

"I don't know what I thought I heard," Beddoes admitted. "I'm not a typically religious guy. It's hard to explain — it was definitely something. Where and why it came from, I'm not sure."

Lily was transported to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, and was upgraded to stable condition on Monday. Her mother was remembered as a caring and selfless person by her family.

"She was very compassionate and a very loving person and always willing to bend over backwards for her loved ones," Jennifer's sister, Jill Sanderson told KSL-TV. "Her baby was the love of her life. She was an amazing mother."

A GoFundMe account has been set up to assist with funeral expenses and Lily's medical care.
